Grocery shopping in North Cyprus: markets, supermarkets, village shops

October in North Cyprus marks the peak of the harvest: markets overflow with pomegranates, persimmons, guavas, late figs and the season's first citrus. It's worth working out where to shop—market, seaside supermarket or village shop—in your first week, not on the last day before you fly home.

Market days

Markets across the TRNC run to a schedule tied to each town. The Çarşamba Pazarı in central Kyrenia (Girne) runs on Wednesdays, 8am to somewhere between 4pm and 6pm, though parking nearby is poor: the municipality's plan to move the site to Batı Doğa Park has been put on hold for now (as of July 2026—check before you travel). In Famagusta (Gazimağusa), near the bus terminal in the Baykal district, the covered Perşembe Pazarı covers 6,150 sq m and runs on Thursdays from 8am to 5–6pm, with parking for 150 cars. In Iskele, the Cuma Pazarı on Ecevit Meydanı sets up on Fridays from 8am to 5pm, and the municipality runs free buses around town that day.

Supermarkets near the coast

Larger chains with long opening hours and parking cluster around the resort areas. Şah Marketplace in Çatalköy, just outside Kyrenia, opens daily from 8am to 9pm, with 300 free parking spaces, a children's play area and a café—10–15 minutes from central Kyrenia along Uğur Mumcu Bulvarı. On the same road, Supreme is open round the clock with a wide range of British and European brands. In Alsancak, people head to İleli for the same kind of shopping, open from 7am to 10pm. In Iskele, Ünimar at the Avkıran Center opens from 7am to 10pm and delivers to your door for orders over 1,000 TL—10–15 minutes by dolmuş (shared minibus) or 5–7 by taxi from Long Beach.

For the Lefke area, where the Park Rest complex is being built for completion by 2028, the nearest town with big supermarkets and a Saturday market (Cumartesi Pazarı) is Güzelyurt, 15–20 minutes along the Güzelyurt-Lefke road. Until the resort opens, this is the only real reference point for anyone scouting the area in advance.

Cash and cards

At markets and village shops (bakkal), it's cash in lira only—cards won't be accepted. In the chain supermarkets you can pay by card, but choose to be charged in TL at the terminal and decline the DCC conversion. In bakkal and bakeries (fırın), open from 7am to 8–9pm, halloumi and olive oil often have no price tag: the price is quoted verbally, so it's worth asking first.

Bring cash lira for the market, pay by card without conversion at the supermarket.
  • Bring small notes to the market: pomegranates cost €1.7–2.5 per kg, and change isn't always available.
  • In Kyrenia on Wednesdays, walk to Çarşamba Pazarı or take a taxi—parking by the market is scarce.
  • In Iskele on Fridays, use the free municipal bus instead of driving.
  • For Ünimar delivery, make sure your order comes to at least 1,000 TL, or it won't be delivered.
  • Check the latest Güzelyurt market schedule with the club concierge before heading to the Lefke area.
